About the Lab
Our Mission
The Laboratory of Exercise Physiology and Applied Bioenergetics (LPEBA) is dedicated to advancing the understanding of human performance and health through the study of energy metabolism.
Directed by Jonathan Tremblay, Ph.D., the lab is a collaborative hub affiliated with:
- The School of Kinesiology and Physical Activity Sciences (EKSAP) at Université de Montréal
- The EPIC Centre at the Montreal Heart Institute
We specialize in integrative physiology, examining how the cardiovascular, respiratory, and metabolic systems interact to support life and movement. Our research spans from elite athletic performance to clinical rehabilitation, always with a focus on the fundamental bioenergetic mechanisms—how the body produces, transports, and utilizes energy.
Research Areas
Our value proposition lies in the integration of fundamental physiological measurements with advanced computational modeling.
1. Integrative Bioenergetics
We study the pathways of ATP synthesis and substrate utilization (carbohydrates vs. lipids) using indirect calorimetry and stable isotope tracers (\(^{13}\text{C}\)). This allows us to quantify exactly how much energy comes from different sources during exercise.
2. Physiological Modeling
We develop mathematical models to predict performance and interpret complex physiological data. These models help coaches and clinicians make data-driven decisions.
3. Nutritional Interventions
We investigate how natural nutritional strategies (e.g., maple products) affect metabolism during endurance exercise, bridging the gap between nutrition and physiology.
Facilities & Equipment
Our laboratory utilizes state-of-the-art equipment to perform comprehensive physiological assessments:
Metabolic Carts: Precision measurement of VO2, VCO2, and energy expenditure.
Isotopic Analysis: Techniques to trace metabolic pathways in real-time.
Location & Contact
We are located at the CEPSUM (Centre d’éducation physique et des sports de l’Université de Montréal).
