For the 50th anniversary of the Montreal Olympic Games, Jérémy Briand and Guy Thibault published an op-ed in La Presse (in French): L’exploit quasi inconcevable de Juantorena.

The piece revisits Alberto Juantorena’s double: winner of the 400 m (44.26 s) and the 800 m (world record, 1 min 43 s) in Montreal in 1976. Using a mathematical model developed at Université de Montréal nearly 40 years ago, the authors show why Juantorena remains, half a century later, the only athlete to win both events at the same Games: they demand nearly incompatible physiological profiles.
