Jérémy Briand delivered an oral presentation at the 31st Annual Congress of the European College of Sport Science (ECSS), held at the SwissTech Convention Center in Lausanne, Switzerland, July 7-10, 2026.

Dynamic energy pathway modelling of field-based running shuttle tests

His presentation, titled Dynamic energy pathway modelling of field-based running shuttle tests, results from a collaboration with Pietro E. di Prampero, Cristian Osgnach, Gaspare Pavei, Giacomo Faraci, Guy Thibault, and Jonathan Tremblay.

Key findings

The study validates integrating GPS-derived metabolic power into Mader’s dynamic bioenergetic model, in 21 soccer athletes performing maximal shuttle tests with GPS units (20 Hz) and a portable metabolic analyzer (COSMED K5):

  • Root mean square error of 5.3 ± 1.5 mL/kg/min for VO₂, with a bias of 0.1 ± 1.9 mL/kg/min
  • Simulated total oxygen consumption within 5% of measured values
  • Among athletes reaching similar end-test blood lactate (9-12 mmol/L), maximal glycolytic rate (VLamax) differed up to 4-fold depending on VO₂max and running economy

Partitioning energy supply across alactic, glycolytic, and aerobic pathways in field conditions opens the door to more individualized training and recovery strategies in team sports.
